Out and About Around the Neighborhood

We’re not having a hurricane here but we have had a lot of rain. A lot of people still depend on bikes and scooters to get around here and a little rain (or a lot as often happens) isn’t going to prevent them from using their cheap means of transportation.  Ever resourceful, they have come up with these clever ponchos to protect them from the rain:

Here we have a deluxe version in maroon modelled on a scooter. Note that there are holes for the rear view mirrors to protrude through. Not sure of the purpose of the clear section in front.

Here we see a purple poncho without the bike.

An entrepreneur taking advantage of the weather. He was terribly amused that I took his picture.

Not everyone is pleased when I try to take their picture.  The next day a fruit seller on the opposite corner yelled at me and started to chase me down the street!

Some of the busy street corners have these people who hang out at the corner:

I think they’re supposed to control pedestrian and bike traffic on their corner. The only thing I’ve ever seen this lady do is screech at you if you step off onto the street before the walk light goes green and then she makes you get back up on the sidewalk. She blows a whistle and shouts at you. She kind of scares me!

This guy, however is keeping all of these bikes and scooters in line so none of them jump the light.

Another overloaded cart was amongst those waiting.

This afternoon there was an event at Meredith’s school with local merchant’s and restaurants giving out samples and brochures. It ended with an improv performance by some of the theatre kids.  Here’s some pictures from one of the skits:

Meredith as a French man

Praying for someone

I think she was being a rock star and she was being attacked by an alien?

Tonight we were eating outdoors at our favorite pizza place, Pizza Marzano, (which is happily right here at Shanghai Centre and has this marvelous goat cheese and sundried tomato thin crust pizza), when Meredith looked up at the sky and noticed this:

See the lighted square? Is it a hole in the sky? Maybe our lives are just a tv show and that's a pretend sky.

Undoubtedly it’s a reflection from the buildings, but it was pretty darn creepy looking with the clouds scuttling past sharp bright square lines in the dark sky.  The picture doesn’t do it justice.

Hoping everyone on the East Coast stays safe.

About DECRYPTKNIT: knitter on the loose in Shanghai

Hi, I'm Marisa Newhouse, a former pharmacist (for a brief time during the Reagan administration) who's real calling was probably anything that has to do with cooking, plants, literature and especially knitting; hence my last and favorite job, working at Woolyminded, a wonderful yarn store. But now, I have moved half a world away to Shanghai where my husband will be working. Lots of people are interested in what we will be doing here and I have always kept journals of our travels, so I thought I'd do it the modern way and keep a blog.

Maybe the clear section in the front of the poncho is for a headlight? I love reading your posts, Marisa. Keep ’em coming!
