We’re not having a hurricane here but we have had a lot of rain. A lot of people still depend on bikes and scooters to get around here and a little rain (or a lot as often happens) isn’t going to prevent them from using their cheap means of transportation. Ever resourceful, they have come up with these clever ponchos to protect them from the rain:
Not everyone is pleased when I try to take their picture. The next day a fruit seller on the opposite corner yelled at me and started to chase me down the street!
Some of the busy street corners have these people who hang out at the corner:
I think they’re supposed to control pedestrian and bike traffic on their corner. The only thing I’ve ever seen this lady do is screech at you if you step off onto the street before the walk light goes green and then she makes you get back up on the sidewalk. She blows a whistle and shouts at you. She kind of scares me!
This afternoon there was an event at Meredith’s school with local merchant’s and restaurants giving out samples and brochures. It ended with an improv performance by some of the theatre kids. Here’s some pictures from one of the skits:
Tonight we were eating outdoors at our favorite pizza place, Pizza Marzano, (which is happily right here at Shanghai Centre and has this marvelous goat cheese and sundried tomato thin crust pizza), when Meredith looked up at the sky and noticed this:
Undoubtedly it’s a reflection from the buildings, but it was pretty darn creepy looking with the clouds scuttling past sharp bright square lines in the dark sky. The picture doesn’t do it justice.
Hoping everyone on the East Coast stays safe.
